The natural music of the earth’s birds and insects joins with the sounds of wind and water in complex ways to create our sense of “aliveness,” in my humble opinion. Take away the rich bird and insect music and we will only be experiencing half the “aliveness” we evolved alongside over the last 300,000 years. A huge emptiness will result. We may very well go crazy in that vacuum.
I think we would go crazy. I already feel crazy listening to the pathetic fragment of the morning chorus knowing, even in just my lifetime, how magnificent it once was. I wonder if we are turning ourselves into automatons and zombies so as to get through the day being so utterly disconnected from nature and so we don't feel the losses. Otherwise, we wouldn't be able to function.
I agree completely. As automatons or zombies we will lead impoverished lives, even if our basic needs are met. Our connection to other living things is a source of soulfulness. Cut that connection and bankruptcy of soul results. It’s already an ongoing phenomenon in our lives. Just one grumpy old guy’s opinion. Aldo Leopold would agree, methinks.
I haven’t heard the winter wren yet this year and I’m starting to worry. Usually at this time their song is all around, in the forest of northern lower Michigan.
No. We can't live without biodiversity. We'll be gone too.
I think you're right.
Indeed. And then our hearts will mimic the sad-sweet song of the lone mourning dove greeting the sunrise.
I can hardly bear it...

Me too.

:-(
Unless there's a nuclear war, I won't be around for that. I'd be really sad, for myself included.
