Pacific Rim institute is reintroducing the checkerspot butterflies to their prairie lands - I am hopeful that I’ll be able to see these butterflies in my lifetime… maybe even soon…? Your essay reminds me I’ll have to go visit that prairie now that it’s in bloom. If you haven’t been, they have a 5 acre ancient prairie remnant that was never paved over or turned into pasture.
5 acres. My heart aches at the reminder of how little is left.
Yes I know of Pacific Rim, but haven't been to see the prairie. I should go. But it will also break my heart.
And it's right next to Coupeville OLF. The onslaught of those fighter jets every day on the wildlife who live there. I almost think it's a cruelty to try to introduce the butterflies there, given what is nearby. But maybe not. I don't know. Anyway, thank you for the reminder.
Oh my heart aches with sorrow for the Taylor’s checkerspot butterflies and the chickadees and all other creatures we are blindly endangering & destroying! But my heart is also filled with the beauty of your writing and the incredible largeness of your heart.
Thank you Elisabeth for the consistent, wonderful work that you do.

That's a good question to ask the Pacific Rim institute. They may not know the answer.
