Biophilia is a love of life and the living world. Industrial civilization is an exile from the living Earth, built with and for machines. Our culture is in its death throes; no culture that systematically destroys the living world can last for long.

A Different Way of Being

I like to imagine a world in which we are deeply rooted to place, a life of relationships with the plants, animals, stories, and dreams connected to the land where we live. In this world, man is no longer at the top of some imagined hierarchy; instead, men and women belong to the intricate web of life, each human animal existing in a natural community of beings we depend upon for life.
